Privacy Policy

Last updated: August 3, 2026

Fluenters ("we", "us", "our") provides a language-learning app currently in beta. This policy explains what information we collect, why, and what rights you have over it.

Information we collect

  • Account information — the email address and password you register with. Passwords are stored as a one-way cryptographic hash; we never store or have access to your plain-text password.
  • Beta program status — whether you've redeemed a beta invite code, so we can grant the access it unlocks.
  • Learning progress — which lessons and cards you've completed, so your progress is saved across visits and devices. This is the core purpose for which we collect data: tracking your progress through the course, not building an advertising or behavioral profile.
  • Automatically collected information — standard web server logs (such as IP address and browser type) generated by our hosting provider as part of normal operation.
  • Cookies — we use a login session cookie (keeps you signed in) and a language-preference cookie (remembers your chosen site language). Both are strictly necessary for the app to function. We do not currently use advertising or tracking cookies. If we add analytics (such as Azure Application Insights) in the future to help us understand app performance and fix errors, any non-essential cookies that involves will be optional — you'll be able to accept or reject them, and rejecting will not limit your ability to use the app.

We do not currently access your microphone, and we do not record, collect, or use your voice in any way. Lessons consist of pre-recorded MP3 audio files that we stream to your device for playback only — we do not capture any audio input from you or your device. If we introduce a feature that uses your microphone (for example, pronunciation feedback), this policy will be updated before that feature is available to describe what's captured, how it's processed, and what choices you have.

We do not currently collect any payment or financial information — during beta, premium lesson access is granted free of charge through a beta invite code, not payment. If we introduce paid subscriptions in the future, this policy will be updated before that happens to describe how payment information is collected and handled (typically by a third-party payment processor, not stored directly by us).

How we use your information

We use the information above to operate your account, track and save your learning progress across visits and devices, grant beta access when a valid invite code is used, communicate with you about your account (such as confirming your email or resetting your password), and keep the service secure and working correctly. We do not use your data for advertising, and we do not sell or rent it to third parties.

Who we share it with

We do not sell your information or share it with advertisers. Your data is processed by the infrastructure providers we use to run the service, currently:

  • Microsoft Azure — application hosting and database storage
  • Microsoft Azure Communication Services — sending account-related emails (confirmation and password-reset links)
  • Cloudflare Turnstile — bot and spam protection on registration. It processes transient signals like your IP address and browser characteristics in the moment to distinguish humans from bots, then discards them. It does not set cookies or track you, and Cloudflare states it cannot identify individuals from this data.

The app may also link you to an optional Google Form to collect beta feedback. If you choose to open it and submit feedback, that information is collected by Google and governed by Google's own privacy policy, not this one.

Our infrastructure is located in the United States. If you're using Fluenters from outside the United States, your information will be transferred to and processed in the United States.

Data retention

We keep your account and progress data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, or if we terminate your account for violating our Terms of Service, your account record and learning progress are permanently removed without undue delay. Automatically collected server logs (such as IP address and browser type) are kept only as long as necessary for security and operational purposes, and are not retained indefinitely.

Your rights

Fluenters is based in Ontario, Canada, and we handle your personal information in line with Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA). If you're located in the European Union or United Kingdom, you also have rights under the GDPR/UK GDPR. Under either framework, you have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you
  • Correct inaccurate data
  • Delete your account and associated data at any time, from within the app
  • Request a copy of your data in a portable format

You can delete your own account directly from the app, or contact us at the address below to access, correct, or request a copy of your data. Deleting your account is immediate and permanent — once it's done, we no longer have your data to provide a copy of. If you want a copy of your data, request it before deleting your account, not after. We'll respond to any request sent to us within 30 days.

Children's privacy

Fluenters is not directed at children under 16, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 16.

Security

We use industry-standard practices to protect your data, including encrypted password storage, encrypted connections (HTTPS) between your device and our servers, account lockout after repeated failed login attempts, and bot/spam protection on registration.

Data breach notification

If a data breach occurs — whether in our own systems or with a service provider we use (such as Microsoft Azure) — that poses a real risk of significant harm to you, we will notify affected users by email without undue delay, and report to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada as required by PIPEDA. If you're located in the European Union or United Kingdom, we'll also meet applicable GDPR/UK GDPR breach-notification obligations, including notifying the relevant supervisory authority within the required timeframe. This applies to breaches resulting from security incidents, unauthorized access, or accidental disclosure — not just malicious attacks.

Changes to this policy

As Fluenters moves out of beta and adds new features (such as paid subscriptions), this policy will be updated to reflect them. We'll update the "last updated" date above when that happens.
